MMMM, There is something in the virtual air- Is it better to be counted
among the many, as part of diversity, or to be identified separately and
looked at exclusively? This is an important question recently raised by a
GOVERNMENT of Canada call for proposals on the status of women entitled
Where have all the Women gone? SHifts in Policy Discouses. I cannot
figure out if the call for proposals is part of the neo-liberal agenda to
divide and conquer, or is it some smug academic baiting us enthusiastic
researchers, daring us to answer this important question. The point they
put forward ( which I would LARGELY but not totally CONTEST) is that
family centered, human rights centered, and difference or diversity
centered discourse has MASKED gender issues and undermines womens
equality.
WHAT? (thats what I said) SO Here on this virtual community we are
arguing, or asking, for inclusion into the pot of diversity saying that it
means we are recognized for what we are- part of humanity and with
identities and social construct issues quite similar in nature to gender,
race, class and sexuality. And here they ( the Status of Women Canada)
are putting out a call for research saying women should (sic) be removed
from this dangerous pot of diversity because it dillutes issues of gender
and important inequality facts that have not yet been addressed. To view
the call for papers see http://swc-cfc.gc.ca/research/cfp99a-e.html
or if that is wrong ( my mistake) just stop after ca and use the menu.
I hope this adds a litte twist to our discussion- as I for one prefer a
diversity lens to a single scoped gender OR disability lens, but seems
that some women (or some civilservants) disagree. MMMMM Tanis
