I don't know of a recent book, but according to De Tribus Ordinibus
Sanctorum Hiberniae (probably ninth century), the 1st and 2nd orders of
saints (dating roughly 431-599) had one form of tonsure, "silicet ab aure
usque ad aurem." The third order (600-644) contained much more diversity
than the first two, including their style of tonsure: "aliqui enim habebant
coronam, aliqui cesariem."
