While not free, the CINAHL database does include a "Cited References" field
which can be searched quite successfully using a combination of author's
last name(s) and a textword phrase from the title. Citations are keyed
exactly as given in the citing source, so this is not foolproof. References
are included for nursing, allied health, and other selected titles beginning
in 1993. The references are included if and only if the publishers give
permission (this information is part of that protected by copyright), so
coverage is not 100% for the litereature indexed by CINAHL. By the way,
cited references are included for the Cochrane reviews indexed in CINAHL.
The references are in the "Long Record" view.
I also second the recommendation to use index terms from key studies.
Remember that subject indexing is an art, not a science, and that search
vocabularies are not identical for MEDLINE, CINAHL, and other databases you
might use.
Hope this helps - Peg
