Respectful visitors are welcome, regardless of beliefs. Since Catholic
parishes come in all shapes, sizes and liturgical styles, I might offer some
considerations about finding a place to visit. There are places where one
finds the current liturgical books celebrated in Latin (e.g., Westminster
Cathedral, London or Birmingham Oratory), but as a medieval art historian,
you are most likely to be interested in attending a 'traditional' parish or
liturgy. These are parishes or groups within a parish that use --more or
less-- the liturgical books of 1962. That was the last version of the
so-called 'Tridentine' books prior to the revisions after SVCII. As has been
observed, such liturgies are fairly widespread now, although a bit less
common in Britain than in other areas. Some of these are celebrated by the
(now schismatic) SSPX, as Christopher Crockett found in Brethencourt, and
others by diocesan priests or one of the traditional orders in union with
Rome. The liturgical books are the same. http://www.latinliturgy.com has a
directory of Latin Masses in the USA and Canada. Latin Mass magazine has a
directory of UK sites as well, but I don't know where to find this for you
on line.
When you decide to go, it will be more interesting for you if you get a
copy of the texts for the Mass or the Office you will attend and have it
with you to follow along. Or find someone knowledgeable who would be willing
to be with you and serve as guide. As to posture, find a comfortable seat
and join in the posture changes as you are comfortable doing, especially
standing so that you will be able to see.
Others on the list will no doubt offer additional hints to enhance your
experience. Enjoy.
