Thank you for this very helpful answer- I should have added that the
image I am looking at is Brescian in origin, 1530, and I have not
found a reference to the inscription in local texts. If there is no
liturgical basis for the inscription, there are alternative
interpretations of the image possible, one of which might include a
reference to a masacre in the twon in 1512.
