>Presumably the guy in the tree was Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). The encounter
with Zacchaeus immediately precedes the entry into Jerusalem in Luke's
account.

Thank you, S.D.
I *knew* I should have done just a *bit* more work on the iconography of that
portal.
Not much presumtion involved, it would seem, though kind of you to put it that
way:
(Luke 19:4) And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree (_in
arborem sycomorum_) to see him: for he was to pass that [way].
It looks like the Étampes Master had a bit of trouble conceiving a sycomore
[that's "sickamore" in Indianer--or "sickymore" in Southern Indianer--btw]
tree:

But, hold on a moment, the encounter with Z. did, indeed, take place *before*
the Choosing of the Colt, much less before the Entry itself.
The image of the Guy in the Tree was just too good an one to not be conflated
into the Major scene (the Entry)(?).
Should have asked him there at Bréthencourt, I suppose.
Say, whilst I have you here on the _pons asinorum_, S.D.,
I note no reference to garments being cast on anything but the colt (19:35) in
Luke's account.
Is there a textual basis for the garment tosser as well?
I've always thought that the scene to the right of the Entry
itself--which was cut in half (at least) by the addition of a spiffy new South
transept--would have been the Choosing of the Colt; but I suppose the previous
encounter with Z. is also a possibility.
Though, whatever it was, it probably had a typological relationship with the
corresponding scene on the left side of the portal, the Massacre of the
Innocents (which, alas, I don't seem to have a picture of on my wretched
under-construction tour of this portal:
http://centrechartraine.freeservers.com/etsop.html , though those with large
monitors and an active imagination can just make it out in the general view of
the scene:http://centrechartraine.freeservers.com/etampes/soport/ETS-L.JPG )
Thanks again, Doctor Flexiblis.
Best from here,
Christopher
