The reformed (1955 revision) Palm Sunday liturgy that I am supposing you
experienced was a pretty moving phenomenon. One literally covered a lot of
ground when celebrating it to the full, and everyone got into the act in
some fashion. A little rain would not slow down a group dedicated to the
long form of the procession with palms. Some places even incorporated
elements of the medieval mystery plays into it, e.g., riding on a donkey and
throwing down palms and garments onto the ground. Even for our moderate,
strictly-by-the-rubrics version, we spent months of musical and coreography
practice each year to prepare.
