G'day again from Australia,
I have a letter from India dated December 1850 addressed to Miss E.M. Chitty
MUNTHAM (?) near Horsham Sussex.
Are there any listmembers who would know if Muntham is a village or a
house ? I have been unable to find it on a map, and it is not in our
"Shell book of English Villages" but the letter writer asks these
questions....
"Tell me of home and how the place looks I can imagine rather bare and
wintry but how do the outbuildings look, the North & South stables, the
Granary, the Brewhouse, Washouse and laundry, all these are frequently
thought of by me and I frequently wonder whether the wall round the oval
pond is as it used to be, also the Yew Hedge whether it has been kept
clipt, or is it untidy....."
Would that description ring a bell with anyone ?
The writer is N.I.Chitty brother to Miss E.M. Chitty and he has just been
promoted to Quartermaster. -fascinating contents - and if anyone is
interested I am quite happy to share the contents.
