Hello
As a new subscriber to the local-history list I would like
to introduce myself. My name is Paul Collins, and I am an Industrial
Archaeologist who works as a Lecturer in Industrial Heritage at the
Ironbridge Institute in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire.
Part of my time is spent in consultancy and advisory work, most of
which involves (often agonizing) decisions over the fate of old
buildings. Each of these buildings has an importance, often mostly in
the local history of the given area. My subject also shares many
common interests and approaches with local historians, we are often
using the same records in the same record offices or archives.
I would hope to share my thoughts with other subscribers to this
Mailbase list, and to scout around for advice on research matters.
Hopefully I may also be able to offer some advice based upon my
experience.
I would also like to increase awareness of the work we do here at
Ironbridge. We are a self-funding postgraduate teaching and research
institute, which is part of the Department of Ancient History &
Archaeology at the University of Birmingham. We offer Postgraduate
Diplomas and MAs in Heritage Management and Industrial Heritage, the
latter being my specialty. The courses are offered in four 3 week
modules, on a full- or part-time basis, and have been tailored to suit
the needs of professionals who are in-post. It is possible to complete
all the necessary study and work for one of our qualifications in 1
year. We have also just received HEFC funding which allow us to offer
Student Bursaries which effectively reduce the cost of a full course's
study to £2,675.
If you, or anyone you know is interested in finding out more about the
Institute and its courses, please contact our Administrator, Emma
Bass: [log in to unmask] or call her on 01952 432751.
