We have recently expanded our Internet access via 22 new multimedia PCs.
Public use of these PCs is free, except for the Internet.
Therefore we do not want the public to be able to access the Internet,
without staff logging them on. (We also do not want people to use the
Internet unregistered for other reasons - e.g. security and children without
permission.) As we connect to the Internet via the council's network, it is
not possible for a password to be prompted for each time someone makes a
connection to the Internet, despite the libraries having a dedicated
firewall, according to our IT section.
Therefore we use two log-ins for each of our PCs - one for 'normal usage'
and one for 'Internet'. However, this presently is not manageable as so
many programs contain links to the Internet - e.g. all Microsoft Office
Programs, Encarta, WebWise, Britannica etc.
Is it possible to disable these links? We use Winlock on our machines but
this cannot stop Internet Explorer 4 from loading, as apparently the links
use '.dll' files instead of '.exe'.
Has anyone been faced with this problem? Can anyone suggest any solutions or
ways to improve our situation. I will share suggestions with others, if
there is sufficient interest / any similar experiences.
