Research Geophysicist / University of Karlsruhe, Germany.
The Geophysical Institute of the Karlsruhe University has a 2-year,
full-time position (with the possibility of extension for three more
years) in seismology at the Collaborative Research Center 'Strong
Earthquakes', a strategic research project jointly run by
geoscientists and civil engineers of Karlsruhe University. The focus
of the project is on the prediction of strong ground motion of
devastating Vrancea earthquakes using data of the recently installed
moderate/strong motion network (Kinemetrics K2-Systems) in the eastern
part of Romania. This includes estimation of empirical site responses
by different methods (source-site separation by waveform inversion;
spectral ratio techniques, etc.), utilisation of Empirical Green's
Functions, large-scale 3-D modelling and the development of response
maps for frequency ranges of engineering interest. At present the
K2-network consists of 25 free field stations in the epicentral area
and of 6 stations in Bucharest. Within the next years automated
communication between the field stations and the network center in
Bucharest is planned in order to make a regional 'Shake-Map'
available, shortly after a strong Vrancea event. The applicant should
have broad knowledge in seismology and expertise in analysis of
earthquake weak and strong ground motion. The position requires an
Ph.D. in science. Since the successful candidate will be member of the
CRC, an interest in multidisciplinary research is required. (See our
Web site: www-sfb461.physik.uni-karlsruhe.de).
Applicants should send a letter of application, a current curriculum
vitae and a list of publications to the CRC, Geophysical Institute of
Karlsruhe University, Hertzstr. 16, 76187 Karlsruhe, Germany.
