It's my understanding that the decided to change their focus from
creating guidelines themselves (a relatively cumbersome process for a
federal government body to undertake) to the much more efficient process
of giving grants to academic institutions or specialty societies to
create the guidelines. AHCPR still has a great deal of oversight and
sets quality standards for the guidelines. . . in fact they are one of
the three parents of the new guidelines website at www.guidelines.gov
along with the AMA and the AAHP. . .check it out.
Hope this is helpful.
