The correspondence on professors and competence has prompted me to share
some good news with the list - that Rod Jackson (of New Zealand Guidelines
fame) has now been promoted to Professor of Clin Epi in Auckland (hope I've
got that right). Rod has done an enormous amount of work for EBHC, and has
given countless members of this list individual support for their own
projects and queries. It strikes me that this promotion is long overdue,
and it occurred to me that perhaps the grounds for academic promotion should
be changed to include a measure of the impact factor of the applicant's work
in terms of estimated lives saved per paper published and effectively
disseminated. Had that been the case, I suspect Rod would have got his gong
years ago!
Have a good summer (or winter) everyone!
