Ambreen _ i know you've had a quick look - because I was probably there at
the time - but both these software packages will do what you want -
my advice if you have time is to prepare a small dataset - 2 or 3 files and
try them out in a rather serious way with the demo versions - (free) - i.e.
really get to grips with some issues in your data - and just see which one
you 'like' using the most.
I know I am always saying this but the real problem is you won't know what a
package cannot do to your liking until you have finished your first
project - and you have REALLY become familiar with that one software -
Key things in what you say below -
1. How you like the way you can the filter - to get the results you want -
without going into detail - the ways of doing this in both softwares are
rather different Families in Atlas, Nodes in Nudist
2. Output - the reports that are generated - make sure you can easily do
what you want to do : in particular maybe look at Tabular export in Nudist -
and the ways to vary that, and Primary Documents Codes Table output in
Atlas -
3. Do you want loads of ways of expressing ideas and connections - _within_
the software? Atlas - or the latest QSR software NVivo woudl enable you to
do that.
4. Look at your time constraints - which one do you feel most comfortable
with quickest (if short of time)
5. re coding: Atlas has best interactivity between codes and text -i.e.
flashing between the two - but Nudist has best methods of re-coding or
coding-on the stuff that has already been coded in some way.
6. ATlas is more 'state of the art' compared to Nudist but - QSR NVivo
(just released last week) gives you the option of moving Nudist work up into
a software package with quite different range of tools and possibilities -
including modeler - (a tool which is a bit like the ATLAS network tool - but
not as interactive with the text)
...well.. don't want this to turn into a Atlas/NVivo comparison - huge
topic -
both are really very different tools - maybe they with similar sounding
functions - but completely different 'feel'. Both rather excellent in their
own individual strong areas -
cheers

Subject: NUD*IST V's Atlas
Dear all,
I am thinking of using a qualitative package to analyse my data and
my dilemma is whether NUD*IST or Atlas would be most suitable.
I have got 24 interviews to analyse. All the interviews have been
transcibed and range from 30-60 pages long.
I would like to do some discourse analysis on the data, looking at
how people use certain terms and also coding each transcript
against strategies employed (which have already been developed but
need testing).
I would also like to be able to filter the interviews and pull up
reports about who said what, i.e. how many women spoke about
belonging for instance.
If anyone could advise me on this matter - on which they have found
easier to use then I would very much appreciate it.
Many thanks
