Dear Tobias,
Here I am again! As I told you, I am working on the Holy Innocents
and came across two interesting MHG excerpts in Ursula Gray's thesis
_Das Bild des Kindes im Spiegel der altdeutschen Dichtung und
Literatur_ (Frankfurt, 1974), unfortunately without much in the way
of background information.
The first is from Hermann von Fritslar (end 14th century) and I can
translate that quite easily but I have no idea about Hermann himself
or the context of the passage:
'Si hant aber nu den trost des ewigen libes und sint des kindes
spilgenoze worden da zu himele' (accents left out).
The second is from Priester Wernher's _Diu drie liet von der maget_
but it is more difficult to translate exactly (although it is clearly
gruesome) and I know nothing about either author or work:
'Diu kint ungewahsen;
diu hobet sie abeslugen
bein vnd arme genugen
vnd rigen siv and div wafen
div bi den ammen slafen
scholten an ir brusten.
owi welh wvfen, welh chlagen,
da div kint waren in der not
da si lagen allen ende,
hie die fuzze, dort die hende!
owe da man sie hin zuchte
vnd in daz leben abdruckte
da der kinde blut nidergoz
den uerkolten in die schoz.'
If you could give me any help at all, or any reference to an easily
accessible edition, I should be - once again - immensely grateful.
However, please do not rush into this as you probably have plenty of
work ofyour own - it is at your own convenience, and with many thanks
in advance for any help you may feel able to give. (I shall
certainly acknowledge it in my thesis and, who knows, in my book one
day.)
With best wishes,
Sophie
