Christopher Crockett mentioned that he did not know of any Medieval
definitions of art. I have published this one in my corpus of inscriptions
on Irish Pre-Norman reliquaries. There, its implications were used to
refine the dates of these objects, and even, possibly, their raison d'etre.
I gave it again in my article on the Codex Amiatinus and the Lindisfarne
Gospels, where its implications challenged our identification of the
"Vulgate" text used in those books - important since the Codex Amiatinus is
our ealiest intact "Vulgate"! It will come out again in conjunction with my
cyclic timing systems (not apocalyptic, sorry to have misled) in the
proceedings of a conference at Princeton, "From Ireland Coming ...", which
is due out next year.
Publication details are on the CV on my webpage (address below), scroll down
the main page to find it.
I'll check out the apocalyptic stuff, which I didn't know of because it was
outside my scope - but nonetheless potentially relevant. Thanks!
