Didn't know that there *were* any medieval definitions of art--early or
otherwise.
You've probably come across the work of Richard Landes on all things
apocalyptic (if that's roughly what "a cyclic timing mechanism...seen as
aspects of a single cosmic, prophetic chronology" means).
A freqent and interesting contributor to the Medieval History List, he is in
the History Dept. at Boston U. and runs the "Center for Millennial Studies"
there, with a web page which is worth a look for any folks interested in
various aspects of "prophetic chronology":
