Entirely off the top of my head, "ingwinaria" would appear to have a close
relation to "inguinal," a modern medical term that refers to what we might
delicately call "the groin." In other words, an epidemic that caused the
inguinal nodes to swell--i.e., something like the so-called "Black Death"?
If memory serves, though I could be off the mark here, there was an outbreak
of that infection around Gregory's time.
