The implications of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry have been discussed in an
article by Ayub Khan in this month's LAR. Public library colleagues may be
interested in this Executive Briefing on the Lawrence Inquiry's significance
for public libraries. If you are interested in attending, please contact

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES BRANCH EXECUTIVE BRIEFING
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STEPHEN LAWRENCE INQUIRY FOR PUBLIC
LIBRARIES
The London and Home Counties Branch of the Library Association in
association with the Association of London Chief Librarians have put
together an Executive Briefing looking at the significance of the Stephen
Lawrence inquiry for Public Libraries. The Briefing will be held at The
Library Association in Ridgmount Street on Monday 28th June, starting with
Registration at 09.30.
Sir William MacPherson's inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence has put
the issue of institutionalised racism higher on the social and political
agenda than ever before. The inquiry dealt with what lessons could be learnt
from Stephen's racist murder and how organisations should begin to tackle
this issue seriously and effectively.
This timely Executive Briefing, supported by RQA Ltd., will address:
· how the recommendations of the MacPherson Inquiry will impact on Public
Libraries;
· the need for Public Librarians to positively encourage Black Communities;
and
· the launch of a Quality Leaders' Programme for Black Library Workers.
We are delighted that we have been able to assemble such an impressive array
of speakers for this Executive Briefing. Gus John, Consultant and
Broadcaster and former Director of Education and Leisure for the London
Borough of Hackney, will place the issue of institutionalised racism into
the context of Public Library Services. Suresh Grover, Coordinator of the
Stephen Lawrence Campaign, will indicate the implications of the Inquiry
Report for Public Libraries. Shiraz Durrani, from Merton's Library and
Heritage Service, will announce the launch of a Quality Leaders' Programme
for Black Library Workers.
The Executive Briefing is specifically aimed at:
· Senior and Middle Managers who are responsible for Public Library Policy
and Practice;
· Black Library Workers who may wish to take part in the Quality Leaders'
Programme; and
· other Public Library Staff who are committed to implementing the
recommendations of the MacPherson Inquiry.
