I agree with the first part of this statement - i.e. the formation of
cultural identity - but why does identity have to be necessarily tied in to
notions of 'dominant ideology'.
Identities are also a form of resistance - they are not something simply
'given' by particular social formations and discursive regimes. It is
necessary only to read some of Colin Ward's excellent writings (I suggest
The child in the city & The child in the country, for a start) to see how
identities are negotiated and actively constituted by individuals on a
multiplicity of both visible and 'hidden' levels.
