My apologies for mailing everybody again on this topic - but I believe I
have a solution which will allow everybody to be more or less happy. I
have taken as much care as I can to exclude those people who have mailed
their wish to be 'removed'!
Several posts ago somebody suggested that perhaps all those who would
like to discuss this further move to an IRC channel or similar - and
this is perhaps a solution.
The Network for Peace in the Balkans (which was established by a small
group of current and ex-academics) possesses both a website
(http://www.BalkanPeaceNetwork.freeserve.co.uk) and a
mail/news/discussion list. To subscribe to the list merely send a blank
message to [log in to unmask]
The Network seeks to provide the means to enable intelligent and
informed opposition to this war, for the establishment of peace and for
a holistic approach to the Kosovo crisis - which therefore addresses the
crisis within a regional context. Further details are on the web site
and the 'welcome' message subscribers receive. Beyond this
broad aim there is no political 'line'. 'Membership' of the list is not
restricted to academics - although the focus is on providing information
to enable people to construct coherent and constructive alternatives to
NATO's solution! We would welcome the input from colleagues of all
disciplines and professions - International Relations, Environmental
Sciences, Law, Physics, Political Science and so on - to unite people
into one common aim - a lasting peace in the Balkans.
Thus far the list carries 6 or 7 items a day - this is predominatly news
and information which is not available from mainstream media sources -
Yugoslav colleagues have much to give here. Much information on the
effects of the war comes from long respected, independent sources inside
Yugoslavia (which I gather the US has been seeking to prevent). Any
subscriber can post to this list and it is unmoderated.
Perhaps those who would like to participate can 'migrate' to this list
and leave those who wish to remain unconcerned alone!
