Dear Dan,
Thanks so much for the references. Peter the Chanter's school is a
term vaguely used to refer to the generation between Comestor and the
advent of the friars in Paris, although his brand of moral theology
influenced the friars as well. Matthew Paris praises several of them,
including Robert of Courson, Stephen Langton, and James of Vitry, in
hyperbolic terms for various complicated reasons. I was just curious
as to whether Paris' admiration stemmed from Wendover's work or
through reading the circle's works (perhaps obtained from Paris
through Victorine connections?). I suspect the latter, because he
mentions a now lost collection of these three individuals' sermons at
St. Albans, and also read JoV's _Historia Orientalis_, etc.
Basically, the question of where his interest in their careers and
writings began would be solved if he studied in Paris, but I suspect
that this is probably unprovable.
Thanks so much for the citations, and best of luck on your work on
Matthew--he deserves continued study.
Best wishes,
Jessalynn Bird
