Dear Jessalynn,
The reference linking Matthew of Paris with Hugh of St. Victor is in Michael
Clanchy's _From Memory to Written Record_ in the 2nd edition, Oxford: 1993,
pp. 176-177, where mnemonic and organizational aides in Ralf Diceto and
Matthew, along with Matthew's surname (Parisiensis - the Parisian?) suggest
awareness of Victorine teachings. For my own work, I have located fairly
close connections between Matthew and Victorine theories of history,
especially through Peter of Poitier's Compendium of the Genealogy of
Christ, copies of which were made at St. Albans.
Please, refresh my memory a bit on school of Peter the Chanter, and perhaps
I can then recall something in Matthew's work. I get sort of confused by the
different Peters active in Paris at this time (e.g. Poitiers, Comestar,
Lumbard, the Chanter)
Do you know of that letter sent by Abbot Simon requesting works of Hugh for
St. Albans' scriptorium / library. The letter is discussed in Thomson's
catalogue of Mss produced at St. Albans before Matthew. This is an
extremely useful tool for any research into the intellectual life of St.
Albans: Rodney Thomson, Manuscripts from St. Albans Abbey. 1066 - 1235,
(Suffolk: Boydell and Brewer, 1982), pp. 64 -65.
.
As for Roger Wendover, I don't know very much at all. It seems as though
there was some early work by Vaughan, perhaps also Galbrath on the "School
of St. Albans" and I could dig around a bit if you are interested, but my
sense is that not much has been done.
Hope this helps and best of luck. Let me know what you dig up.
best,
Dan
