This is 5 day, residential, mainly facilitated small group learning but
with plenaries on question forming, stats, clinical governance and
educational methods, and teaching on database searching by experienced
librarians. Plus a BBQ and a dinner with a good band!
There are around 20 (possibly less by now) of the 80 places left.
Application form pasted below - print out and use to apply, we're not
proud! The cost is £600 including accomodation, breakfast and lunch and
the BBQ and dinner, so it's a real bargain!

First Northern and Yorkshire Evidence-Based Practice Workshop
Core Skills for Clinical Governance
5 - 10 September 1999
St Hild and St Bede College, Durham University
Evidence-Based Practice and Clinical Governance
"The new NHS" says that a quality organisation will ensure through
clinical governance that evidence-based practice is in day to day
use with the infra-structure to support it. Evidence-based practice
is a process of lifelong self-directed learning which identifies,
clarifies and addresses gaps in our knowledge about healthcare. It
does this by developing certain core skills; question forming,
searching for and critically appraising evidence, incorporating valid
and applicable evidence into practice, and evaluating our
performance.
Who should attend this Workshop?
This Workshop is aimed at health care professionals who want to
develop or expand their understanding and skills in evidence-based
practice. The Workshop will be especially useful for those involved
in developing clinical governance, in quality improvement or in
clinical teaching.
Workshop format
Most of the Workshop will be conducted in small facilitated groups
of about eight participants. You will participate in problem-centred
learning and you will learn most by taking an active role in your
group. There will also be more formal sessions on a variety of core
topics and the opportunity for discussion and debate on related
issues. Time will be provided for further exploration of topics
identified by participants. All participants will have the opportunity
of at least one interactive session on database searching facilitated
by experienced medical librarians. Librarian support will be
available throughout the week for individual searching.
Workshop materials and preparation
Participants will receive in advance, a workbook consisting of
background material, information about the course, and suggested
papers (with critical appraisal checklists and scenarios) on
diagnosis, prognosis, therapy/prevention, quality of care,
systematic reviews, economic analysis and qualitative research.
Participants will benefit most if they bring their own appropriate
paper from their professional setting.
