Programme in Applied Health Research. This is due to commence on the

PG Cert/Dip/MSc APPLIED HEALTH RESEARCH
Two years part-time
Introduction
This exciting new programme is targeted at individuals who are currently working or wish to work in the field of health
research. It has been developed with recent developments in health care such as Clinical Governance, Clinical
Effectiveness and Evidence Based Practice as specifc considerations. Its emphasis is on the use of research
methods and application of research findings in health settings. The core modules aim to provide the student with the
skills and knowledge needed to commission and participate in research and to show effective leadership in the
application of research in health settings. The student can combine the core models with options that allow
specialisation in their particular field of interest.
Specific aims of the programme
1.To enable students to understand the prinicples of research theory and method as applied to health.
2. To enable students to adopt a variety of theoritical and practical approaches to the utilisation of evidence from
the natural and social sciences in clinical and managerial decision making.
3. To empower the student to engage in critical evaluation of their own practice and that of others.
4. To equip students with the managerial and psycho-social skills to engage in effective change managment.
5. To equip the students with the necessary skills to undertake a research study wth guidance as part of a
research team.
Structure of the programme
The programme lasts between 2 and 5 years in a part-time mode. Students complete three core modules for the PG
Cert, three additional option modules for PG Dip and a dissertation for the MSc. Core modules are held in the
afternoon/evenings and the students may choose from selected range of option modules offered by the School of
Health, Biological and Environmental Sciences and other schools throughout the University.

The nature of the programme
The learning model employed is mainly based on reflective problem based learning using real examples from students
own workplace. Assessment is based on course work which involves the students utilising knowledge gained to
develop and implement projects in their own workplace (where appropriate).
The programme is organised to allow maximum interaction between staff and students on the programme and other
relevant programmes/modules in The School of Health, Biological and Environmental Sciences. The School of Social
Sciences and Middlesex University Business School.
