Dear fellow list-members,
Our list-owner having generously given me permission to post
this cry for support, I append a Petition raised on behalf of
The Centre for Women's Studies at the University of Exeter. I do
not teach on this programme, but know it to be imaginative,
innovative (with tremendous emphasis on creativity), rigorous
and successful, as well as serving a major need in the area.
Sometimes the topics chosen by students are medieval! The Director
is Dr Gill Hanscombe.
Please, if you are willing to support CWS, cut and paste the
petition below, sign it, add your academic address, and e-mail
it back to me, with *nothing else at all in the message*. Your
e-mail petitions will be printed out and presented to our
VC next week.

PETITION
Women's Studies at the University of Exeter
The Centre for Women's Studies at the University of Exeter
will close on 31 July 1999 unless recent University
management decisions are revised.
The Centre's programme consists of research degrees and a
taught M.A. in Women's Studies; a weekly Network Seminar
Series run by postgraduate students; additional classes,
lectures, and day conferences; an annual Reading event;
innovative developments in online workshops; and
presentations by visiting scholars and writers.
This is a coherent, overall programme capable, given
support, of generating and developing links between the
academic, commercial, domestic and workplace concerns of
women in the University, in the City of Exeter, in the
region, and beyond. It is also the only Women's Studies
programme in the University; and the only programme
following women-led educational practice.
I request Sir Geoffrey Holland, Vice-Chancellor:
. to suspend the decision to close the Centre
. to convene an open forum for discussing the academic and
financial issues relevant to the Centre's programme
. to set up a public review of institutional sexism in the
University.
Signed:
