WITH APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
EARL is delighted to announce the latest in its ongoing series of New
Library events, with a one-day workshop looking at the training element.
Details are as follows, and we look forward to welcoming you.
****Training for the New Library Network: developing your training
strategy****
15th July 1999
Isaac Newton Centre, London
<quote>Library staff will play the central role in shaping the developing
use of the public library service…they will be the key to the resource.

**About the workshop
Translating the information-handling expertise of librarians into the
networked environment is the primary aim of the New Library training
initiative. Before that can happen though, library managers will need to
think about how that training programme will be delivered. Who needs what
skills? What learning methods are best? How will a large number of staff
be trained in a short time? How will skills be refreshed?
This EARL workshop is intended to help answer some of these questions, to
provide practical guidance on building your training strategy and needs
analysis, in choosing the best mix of learning methods for your staff, and
to look at the funding criteria for training.
To start the day, a keynote presentation from Martin Molloy, Director of
Libraries and Heritage for Derbyshire will look at how new roles for
library staff will emerge and the need to train accordingly. Vanessa
Potter, Director of policy and External Relations at NOF will discuss
funding opportunities and Bronwen Jones will outline the main findings of
the BLRIC Training the future project. Westminster Libraries, who are
working on their training strategy, will share their experience to date and
breakout sessions will consider different aspects of the training process.
Delegates will gain an understanding of the issues to be considered in
building a training strategy, practical advice on thinking through a needs
analysis and have contributed towards EARL good practice guidelines for New
Library training which will form an outcome of the workshop.
**Who should attend?
The day is intended for library and other local authority staff who will be
responsible for the development and/or ongoing management of New Library
training, for those who will be carrying out the needs analysis, and for
anyone who is considering offering training courses or developing
stand-alone self-help tutors.
**Booking information
The cost of the workshop is £70.00 for EARL Partners, £120.00 for others.
