CALL FOR PAPERS
GEOSCIENCE 2000 SYMPOSIUM ON:
INTRA-CONTINENTAL EFFECTS OF THE INDO-EURASIAN COLLISION
Central Asia represents Earth's premier laboratory for studying processes of intracontinental
deformation associated with a major collision. Well known effects of the Indo-Eurasian
collision include Cenozoic uplift of the Himalaya, Karakorum, Hindu Kush and Tibet. Other
distant effects, including uplift of the Pamir, Tien Shan, Altai, Sayan, Hangay Dome,
Transbaikalia, Yunnan China and parts of Indochina, are less well documented. A complete
understanding of Asia's internal strain response to the indentation of India is far from
resolved, and vigorous debate about the importance of N-S shortening versus E-W lateral escape
continues to arise in the literature and at professional conferences. The issues at stake,
namely, how continents partition deformation and accommodate strain, are some of the most
fundamental and salient topics in earth sciences today.
Contributions are invited from workers in all geological and geophysical disciplines who are
involved with understanding the Cenozoic evolution of intraplate regions outside of the
immediate Himalayan collision zone, from Tibet to Transbaikalia, and northwest and southeast
of the collision zone from Tajikistan to Vietnam.
This symposium is one of many that will form Geoscience 2000 at the University of Manchester,
17-20 April 2000. Oral and poster presentations are both invited. Some funding may be
available for visiting speakers. Titles with brief abstracts, for either oral or poster
presentations, should be sent to the contact convener no later than
1 September, 1999
