The LIPID trial (NEJM, Nov 98) of pravastatin was an RCT of 9,000 patients
with recent AMI or unstable angina and a cholesterol of 4-7 mmol. For CHD
death and non-fatal AMI, the relative and absolute reductions in 70+ were
similar to the overall reductions (21% to 18% in the 70+ vs 16% to 12% in
the overall group - age groups showed no significant heterogeneity).
Often the elderly are excluded not because they think the intervention
won't work but because the trialists are worried they'll die of something
else, which mucks up the power of the study.
