Today, 22 February, is the feast of ...
* St Peter's Chair at Antioch
- earliest entry of this feast is in the calendar of St
Willibrord (c. 704)
I looked this feast up in Butler, since it seemed so weird that an
Antioch chair of St Peter should be venerated, besides that in Rome
(so splendidly presented by Bernini), and Butler says: "The festival
of St Peter's chair in general Natale Petri de Cathedra, is marked on
this day in the most ancient calendar extant, made in the time of
Pope Liberius, about the year 354." Same chair?
I usually compare these feasts with those listed in the calendar from
the Ordinary of Chartres Cathedral, but despite the copious offerings
just sent out by Carolyn, there are not many feasts listed from early
February through to late April. I have always assumed that this
sparceness had something to do with Lent and Easter, but can anyone
make this circumstance more specific?
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
