1. at a meeting of BMJ Publishing Group editors last week, richard smith
reported anecdotal evidence that paper subscriptions go UP, not down, when
a journal "goes electronic." accordingly, the jury is out on whether/how
much electronic versions of paper journals will charge their users. i
reckon this will depend, inter alia, on how much they spend taking
advantage of the opportunity provided by the web for extended version of
the articles, extended correspondence, and other costly activities.
2. i've encouraged the BMJ to un-mask the journals who refused their
advert so that their subscribers can have the option of confronting (or
applauding) them about their behaviour. does anybody know who they were?
cheers,
dls
