"On return from my much needed recent holiday I find that I have
inadvertently insulted some well respected local colleagues in my
e-mail "Evidence-based Health authorities and PCG Knowledge Services"
dated 12/03/99 at 23:19:00. My fourth paragraph was poorly drafted and
I recognise that it has caused understandable distress amongst both
the local (N & E Devon) prescribing department and in Public Health. I
apologise unreservedly and completely for any implication that
prescribing advice has been driven by any other motivation other than a
totally professional attempt to give advice founded on an honest review
of
the available evidence.
As I wrote I was considering advice given to use Shampoo conditioner
and close combing as the main treatment for head louse infestations when
my own literature search was not supportive of such advice. My main
argument was that it is important that all those trying quite properly
to
influence prescribing (drug companies and Health authorities) should
use the
same rigorous standards in formulating the advice they give and give
references wherever possible.
Mea culpa ... please accept my apology. I need to be as rigorous
myself!
