Regarding the recent discussion of ranks, for a general
introduction and survey, try out Farwell's _Armies of the
Raj, From the Great Indian Mutiny to Independence:
1858-1947_ (Norton). Farwell helpfully runs through the
gradations of commisioned officers, from the senior calvary
officers, or "rissaldar-majors," and senior infantry
officers, or "subedar-major"; and then on down through the
respective calvary and infantry ranks: rissaldars to
jemadars, and subedars to jemadars (28-29).
Also helpful are Farwell's appendix, "Indian Army Ranks and
Badges" (367), and his bibliography, which cites a
number of more extended and specific discussions of rank.
