Thanks to Michael Smith [Hon. Secretary of the Kipling Society] for
the Indian Army meaning of Jemadar-sais.
I seem to recall hearing Gurkha officers in more recent years using
the term Subadar.
Can anyone confirm whether the Gurkhas still use these two terms?
[or what is left of the Gurkhas - there are many working as
security personnel in Hong Kong - and very efficient they are too,
but no longer permitted to wear their kukri knives]
Subadar [first [highest] rank of Gurkha=Native officer] and
Jemadar [second [lower] rank of Gurkha=Native officer]
and are there any more other rank terms remaining in use from Kipling's days?

It seems that I am not the only one who had difficulty getting into this
Kipling List, perhaps the next Kipling Journal should have more precise
advice on how to subscribe: [i.e.]
Send an e-mail to <[log in to unmask]>
with the words:

as text. [The subject line not being important]
following this you will receive a confirmation message that you must respond to
in the manner set out in the message. And then you are in.
