Could anyone on the list advise me as to where I could get
information on the cult of St Catherine of Alexandria in the
fifteenth and sixteenth century?
A delightful place to start is with the accounts of Felix Fabri, a
Swiss-born Dominican based in Ulm, who journeyed twice, I believe, to
Sinai out of devotion to St Catherine and with a positively ardent
desire to "kiss her bones". See:
Felix Fabri, Fratris Felicis Fabri Evagatorium in Terrae Sanctae...,
ed. C.D. Hassler, Stuttgart, 1843-49, 3 vols
Idem, The Wanderings of Felix Fabri, trans. A. Stewart, Palestine
Pilgrims' Text Society, vols VII-X, London, 1892-97
Popular but still fairly reliable accounts are contained in two books
by H.F.M. Prescott, Jerusalem Journey: Pilgrimage to the Holy Land in
the Fifteenth Century, London, Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1954, and Once to
Sinai: The Further Pilgrimage of Friar Felix Fabri, London, Eyre &
Spottiswoode, 1957.
The BBC did a show on Felix Fabri's journeys several years ago,
narrated by that nice chap with glasses and a funny name that escapes
me at present.
Cheers,
Jim Bugslag
