Dear all,
The kind (and kindly exagerated) response to my Easter JavaScript has
prompted me to add a few features to my calendar page which can now be
accessed at the following URL:
http://www.lieberknecht.de/~prg/calendar.htm
In addition to computing easter dates (of the years 400-1582) you can now
also convert Roman/medieval dating formulas with calends, nones and ides to
modern dd.mm.yyyy format and vice versa (for the time from year one CE up
to year 9999, assuming that the the current regulations of intercalating
leap days will remain unchanged!) and, at the same time, you can determine
the weekday of the given date. For determining weekdays my script uses the
clumsy old procedure of counting the days since Saturday, 1 January 1 CE,
and dividing them by seven, but it avoids the much more elegant date()
function implemented to JavaScript capable Webbrowsers, because this
function, although admirably counting everything by milliseconds,
nevertheless is unable to handle dates of the time before the Gregorian
calendar reform (1582). If I ever manage to acquire a sufficient
understanding of Jewish and Muslim calendars (or if I can steal appropriate
algorithms) I will gladly add further conversion tools.
I have kept everything as a simple one page thing so that you can easily
download it to your disk and use it offline. If you discover bugs or have
problems with using this page, please let me know. If you spy into the
source code, please be indulgent with my style of programming: I am still
only beginning to learn JavaScript, and I don't claim that I will go very
far with it.
Yours,
Otfried
