Dear Derek,
There's plenty of hiking/trekking in the mountains here (Nepal), and
I've asked around a few people who should know....it's not known that
there should be any negative effect on the cardiopulmonary system
when hiking in the mist. The thought is that at altitude, it might
actually have a positive effect, as altitude can be quite drying.
Depending on how high you go, there is the risk of altitude sickness,
but I guess that's a separate issue. The only negative effect of
hiking in the mountains in the mist is that of not seeing where you
are going, and falling over the edge of the mountain! (That may well
have an effect on the cardiopulmonary system!!?)
I guess we are also assuming here that the person hiking is healthy
anyway.
