I am currently undertaking a project in the UK which is jointly funded by
professional bodies of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The project
is aiming to identify the information management needs of the members of
both groups and recommend ways in which the professional bodies can
effectively support the membership in the future.
l am seeking information on management systems which are in use by
physiotherapists and which are valued by the users. I am interested in how
physiotherapists have identified their information needs and what have been
the barriers to implementing paper based or electronic systems within their
organisations.
I am also interested in identifying how ready physiotherapists are to
embrace the 'information age'. Examples of how technology is used in
direct patient care ( as diagnostic, assessment and recording tools) and
ways in which therapists are using the Telematics for communication,
Continuing Professional Development and research & development. I am keen
to hear from therapists in all sectors of health and social care and from
private practice as well as education.
For Physiotherapists outside the UK, can anyone tell me:
1: If any such project has taken place in any other country and, if so,
what was the outcome and is there a contact name or number for further
information?
2: If, or how, your professional body supports you and your colleagues in
the area of information management,
3: The role of your professional body in prescribing terminology to be used
in patient records.
4: Personal perspectives on information management needs - in any sector.
Any comments at all would be welcome as we clearly see the developments
outside the UK impacting on the strategy for development within the UK.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Ruth Garner.
