which taught me a lot. Correspondence now seems to have
dried up but if anyone has any information on the kind of
chapels or shrines which sprang up on former pagan sites as
a means of christianising them, I'd still be grateful to
hear from you.

One further example that comes to mind is the prevalence of chapels
dedicated to St Michael on hill tops. Prominent examples include
Mont St Michel, St Michael's Mount (the Cornish version), and the
chapel of St Michael at Glastonbury. I recall years ago reading (no
idea where) that this is an example of a very specific means of
christianizing a particular sort of pagan site.
