I'm posting this query on behalf of a member of the archives-nra
list who is, alas, unable to post to medieval-religion.
Parishes in England and Wales were, from the mid-C16 onwards,
required to send to their diocesan bishop each year a transcript of
the parish register of baptisms, marriages and burials. These
documents are known (not surprisingly) as Bishops' Transcripts (BTs)
and they survive from approximately the mid-1560s.
The question posed is whether there was a similar practice on the
continent either in the C16 or before. Or were BTs an Anglican-only
thing?
Thanks in advance for any answers received.
