I recently did a cursory search for information on this and found the
following:On 11 Nov., 1563 the decree regarding the
sacrament of matrimony was drafted-- at the council of Trent (Dec. 13 1545
- Dec. 15, 1563) Pope Paul III opened the council but died in 1549, the
council continued under Julius III (1550-55) and Paul IV (1555-9), finally
closing under Pius IV (1559-65) -- who is usually associated with the
sacrement of marriage. The issue of marriage itself was constantly
being debated and defined through church history -- especially at times
when clerical celibacy rules were being debated or attemptes were being
made to have them enforced (1059 Nicolas II) or (1075 Gregory VII) or
at the first Lateren Council, 1123. Also, in 1208 Innocent III declared
marrige "blessed." -- In other words, simply pin-pointing the date the
marriage was declared a sacrament doesn't help much -- you need to look
into church councils o historys dealing with the directly with the period
that you are interested in. Hope this helps.
