I picked up the other day (at Rievaulx, actually) the Cistercian Fathers
Series,
no. 2, "Aelred of Rievaulx: Treatises & Pastoral Prayer". This contains
Aelred's treatise on Jesus at the age of twelve, which is actually three
treatises in one;
the first, according to the historical sense, the second, according to the
allegorical sense, and the third, according to the moral sense. It occurs
to me that it might be a very useful text for introducing students to
medieval exegesis. Has anyone tried so using it?
The Supple Doctor.
