Dear Colleagues,
I posted a message to hagiomail, which Graham Jones kindly responded to
with additional information, but responded on medieval-religion. Perhaps
the two lists overlap to a great degree, but I though it useful to send to
this list a copy of the message Graham was replying to.
Cheers, and apologies once again for botching the information on Monte Gargano.
Patrick Nugent.
Dear Colleagues,
Most of us are medievalists or byzantinists or students of antiquity, but I
have a side interest in survivals and permutations of hagiography in the
twentieth century. I recently stumbled onto an amazing Web-site relative
to Our Lady of Naju (a Marian apparition in Korea). Fascinating to see how
the ancient interrelation between text, traditional motifs, art, and
visionary experience combine in new ways in this website, which has a
miracle collection, some visionary reports, and several photographs of a
Madonna weeping bloody tears. Don't ever let your students tell you your
research is irrelevant!
The page is part of a larger site with interests in pilgrimage (the
Pilgrimage of the Two Hearts, i.e. of Jesus and Mary) and in the cult of
St. Michael the Archangel.
Surely there are other such Web-sites (I don't make a point of looking for
them, at least not at the moment) but if others share my interest in Marian
apparition claims and the survivals of hagiographic technique and trope,
you may find this Web-site worth a visit.
