EARL AND UKOLN NETWORKED INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SEMINAR:
ICT strategy and public library website management: a seminar for success
Wednesday 3 March 1999 12.00 - 4.30 Broadway House, London SW1
EARL, the Consortium for Public Library Networking and UKOLN, the UK Office for Library Networking are working together to deliver a series of seminars on networked information and the public library. These seminars are designed to offer practical advice and guidance to both public library and local authority IT staff, on management and technical issues concerned with the delivery of electronic services over the Public Library Network, and the central role of the library website. They are also intended to offer an opportunity for the two groups of staff to work together on issues of common concern and establish a new community for networked information management.
AIM OF THE SEMINAR
There are two major management aspects involved with information management in a networked environment: strategic and technical. It is important to understand the strategic aims and objectives implicit in web presence for a public library, and to appreciate the technical framework within which it is to be developed. As LIS and IT professionals, we must work together to ensure that services delivered via the library website are effectively managed and delivered. This first seminar in the series is designed offer an introduction to the strategic management issues raised in developing a public library website (such as successful integration with the whole service); to explore the strategic and policy objectives for establishing a strong web presence for the library service; to offer examples of different approaches to website strategic management and development, and to provide an opportunity to explore the issues involved and ways they might be addressed.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The seminar is aimed at library service and IT Department staff who are responsible for the overall management and development of local authority and public library websites. It will be particularly relevant to those who are working on ICT service strategies and their implementation as the New Library Network is rolled out. Please note, the seminar does NOT address the use of technical tools.
