Dear list,
I am not sure if the list is aware of this but the term odds does not have a
reasonable accepted translation in Spanish.
A group us was recruited by Brian Haynes to translate the glossary for the
Spanish version of the ACP JC. Everything went smoothly until we stumbled
with the word "odds". Since the word is associated with the world of
gambling, the Spanish words that came up belonged to that world and were
particular to the underworld of each Spanish-speaking region of the Americas
and Europe.
In trying to be evidence-based about this, I decided to look up the
literature on this and found an article by a Mexican linguistics expert that
suggested for a number of different arguments (all pretty convincing) that
the correct word in Spanish is "oportunidad". Although one might feel
inclined to translate "oportunidad" as opportunity, other accepted
translations include chance and odds.
The reason I share this with you is that maybe it will help explain the
concept of odds to non-initiated students by using the word opportunity
instead of the word odds. It works in Spanish!
Cheers!
Victor
