Ingegerd:
Are you familiar with Georges Duby's "The Knight the Lady and the Priest:
The Making of Modern Marriage in Medieval France"? I find it what of his
most satisfying books. It explores how the Church gradually takes over
marriage and makes it a sacrament. His starting point for the
"Christianization" of marriage is the ninth century, which appears to be
borne out elsewhere in the literature.
