What Oriens said of the gentleman who thought Satan some form of divinity
reminded me of the following: One of our students recently taught a
Western civilization course at a nearby Jesuit school. During a
discussion of the Reformation, he discovered - to his surprise - that most
of his students, although raised Roman Catholic, had adopoted a sort of
homogenized American Protestant view of the theological issues, including
the self-evident, self-interpreting truth of the English translations of
the Bible current just now. Although a Jew by background, he felt
obligated to defend a Catholic viewpoint. Whatever the churches are
teaching, much of it seems not to get internalized.\
