Subject: Postgrad retreat to Medieval Manor House (fwd)
There are still a couple of places left for some mad medieval mayhem. I
won't be organising it again next year so this is your last opportunity
and a great chance to meet other young medievalists. Please respond
either to myself or to [log in to unmask] (I'm on holiday at
the end of January so if you want a response then you should contact
her).

Gurney Manor Postgraduate Medieval Retreat 15th -19th February 1999
For two years now I have organised retreats for Bristol medievalists to a
beautifully restored late medieval manor house run by The Landmark Trust
in Cannington, Somerset (listed in Pevsner as Guerney Street Farm). These
have proved to be very popular and this year we have decided to tie it in
with the Bristol postgraduate conference in February 1999 for a
post-conference retreat (Mon 15th - Fri 19th). This will be
an ideal opportunity for postgraduate medievalists from around the country
to get to know each other in the most beautiful surroundings - a carefully
restored manor house that still maintains many of its medieval
characteristics.
Although there may be some who do not want to leave the plush sofas and
open fires of the house (it will be February after all), there will be
plenty of opporutnities for others to visit a number of interesting
medieval sites including the Norman church and remains of the Norman
castle of Stogursey and the small but surprisingly complete Cistercian
abbey at Cleeve with its medieval wall paintings (& cardboard cut-out
monks). Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Abbey and Dunster Castle are also
only about half an hour's drive away.
We will be leaving Bristol on Monday morning after the conference and
returning to Bristol on the Friday. There are only places for 9 people and
we will be using a first come, first served basis with priority going to
those who are also coming to the conference. There are two rooms with
double beds, two twin and one single. Sheets and towels are provided. The
kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering (there is even a dishwasher!).
Transport - Hopefully there will be enough cars leaving from Bristol. If
you have a car and will be bringing it, please mention this when booking
and you may get some passengers and petrol money.
Cost - Accommodation and fuel 50 pounds (for 4 nights)
Travel 5-8 pounds (approx)
Food 10-15 pounds (self-catering in groups)
Drink ????
Well, it's cheaper than Leeds and those who have done it before will agree
that it's an unforgettable experience. The reason that I have put all this
on ANSAXNET is because I'm an Anglo-Saxonist and I'm trying to fill the
place with Early Medievalists for a change.
Hope to see you there...
