It is interesting to use Parking Spaces as a reflection of an
organisation's beliefs and commitments to disabled users.
I work as the Disability Officer at Brunel University. When I started in
April last year the first thing I wanted to tackle was the problems of
parking for disabled students and staff. We have a few designated spaces
dotted across campus. However, they more often than not used by
non-disabled users (we request that the Orange Badge be used).
When confronting the University about the situation I received two rather
contradictory responses:
1. It is difficult to 'police' all the carparks to see who is using them (
we do not have any penalty system in place and the University refuses to
incorporate one)
2. Non-disabled students use these sapces when the carparks get full and
they find it unfair that a space is left empty or hardly ever used!!!!!!!
Nothing has or can be done about these spaces and I often have to inform
prospective students that reserved parking is not guaranteed. So much for a
more accessible HE!
