The introduction of microprocessors and computer-controlled production tools
into industry has given a new perspective to manufacturing processes
worldwide.  Computer aided design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM),
flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), group technology (GT), and computer
integrated manufacturing (CIM) have been considered by many as viable tools
for reducing direct and indirect manufacturing costs and improving product
quality and production flexibility.  However, most of these developed tools
and techniques highly concentrate on specific manufacturing tasks such as
graphical design, process planning, part family formation, and computer
simulation, and they do not often provide a totally integrated environment
for the designer to create 
a high-quality, cost-effective, optimal product.  Artificial intelligence
(AI) approaches based on genetic algorithms (GA), simulated annealing (SA),
artificial neural networks (ANN), etc. now represent the major trend in
intelligent design and manufacturing.  The objective of this conference is
to provide an international forum to promote, exchange, and disseminate
information and research results on Engineering Design and Automation.

Four copies of an abstract (in English) of about 300 words (including names,
addresses, phone, fax number, and e-mail address of all authors) should be
submitted to individuals listed below.  All accepted papers will be
published in the Conference Proceedings. A revised and expanded version of
selected papers presented at the conference will be considered for
publication in a special issue of the Engineering Design and Automation
Journal.
